Phra Malai texts, named after the Buddhist monk who travelled to heaven and hell, were popular didactic fables from the 18th Century onwards. See H. Ginsburg, Thai Manuscript Painting, London 1989, pp. 72-88. For examples at auction, see Bonhams New York, Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art, 18th September 2013, lot 232; and Islamic and Indian Art, 4th October 2011, lot 441. The paintings in our manuscript include depictions of demons in hell, and a peasant assisting Phra Malai.
