Le talent de l'Américain l'a poussé là où, depuis 1974, il n'était plus habitué à aller : près de la défaite. Aussitôt terminée, la rencontre est qualifiée d'historique, de légendaire. Le match du siècle ? « Le match le plus terrible de ma vie », déclarera le Suédois.

Björn Borg defeats John McEnroe after 3 hours and 53 minutes of an epic battle (1–6, 7–5, 6–3, 6–7, 8–6), claiming his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. The American's talent pushed him to a place he hadn't been since 1974: the brink of defeat. As soon as it ended, the match was hailed as historic, legendary. The match of the century? "The toughest match of my life," said the Swede.
