Historical context
During the four-day mission, McDivitt and White conducted 11 scientific experiments, including one focused on photography to capture images of Earth's weather and terrain. Using a NASA-modified 70-millimeter Hasselblad 500C camera loaded with Eastman colour film, they obtained these spectacular adjoining photographs with vivid shades of blue, showcasing the coast of Florida and Cape Kennedy, their launch site. From its earliest missions, NASA has been an innovative leader in Earth science studies and these photographs represented a new era in the study of the Earth and its resources.
