Historical context
the Eve of Their Perilous Mission.
Until just days before the mission, Ken Mattingly was assigned as the prime Command Module Pilot, but after being exposed to measles, he was replaced by backup astronaut Jack Swigert. With little time for adjustments, the newly formed Apollo 13 crew was hurriedly photographed for this now-iconic official portrait just one day before launch, pausing briefly in the midst of the intense pre-flight preparations.
None of them knew at the time that they were about to embark on one of the most perilous journeys in the history of space exploration—a mission that would test the limits of human ingenuity and endurance.
