Neil Armstrong, 16-24 July 1969

Printed 1969.

Large format vintage chromogenic print on special textured canvas-like Kodak paper [NASA image AS11-40-5949].
With "A Kodak Paper" watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA).

28 x 35 cm. (11 x 14 in.)

Historical context
This large-format print, produced on rare canvas-like paper, immortalizes humankind's first exploration of another world.
This scenic lunar photograph presents a striking tableau of Tranquillity Base: Buzz Aldrin stands at the scientific site, positioned between the Passive Seismic Experiment (PSE) and the Laser Ranging Retroreflector (LRRR). In the background, the Lunar Module Eagle, the U.S. flag, and the TV camera that broadcasted the historic moonwalk to millions complete this extraordinary composition.

"You can see pictures, and you can appreciate from pictures. But pictures are different from being there."

—Neil Armstrong (Chaikin, Voices, p. 66)
