Historical context
This vivid photograph, taken with the Hasselblad Super Wide camera and its 38mm lens, captures Oman and Saudi Arabia on the Arabian Peninsula, with Iran, Pakistan, and India visible in the background. The strait connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman is directly above the antenna. The image looks north from an altitude of 270 nautical miles during Gemini XI's 26th revolution, as the spacecraft ascended for its record-breaking climb in Earth orbit.
Gemini's wonderful photographs of the Earth marked the birth of our environmental consciousness.
