Footnotes
The first complete edition of one of the foundation stones of English romantic poetry. Lyrical Ballads was first published anonymously in 1798, containing eighteen poems by Wordsworth and four longer ones by Coleridge, most notably 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. The second edition followed two years later, this time attributed to Wordsworth, and was expanded into two volumes with the addition of volume one's famous Preface ("the revolutionary manifesto of the romantic poets of the next generation", PMM) and forty-one new poems in volume two.
