Footnotes
Portraits of the "Heroes of Greek Independence" by Adam Friedel, a Danish Philhellene who, from about 1821 to 1824, travelled with a "lithographic press on his back through Greece... [and] was at Missolonghi for a while with Byron [illustrated in the work], and [...] married the sister of John Hodges, one of Byron's artificers" (Blackmer), after which he settled in London, where he published his series of portraits.
Blackmer notes that the work was issued without a title-page, and in many variants, but each part in this set appears to be first edition, with plates dated from September 1824 to June 1826, and with plates in the first two parts on India-proof paper, and 3 plates in part 4 marked "Proof".
