FRANKLIN (BENJAMIN)

[The Examination of Benjamin Franklin Relative to the Repeal of the American Stamp Act, in MDCCLXVI]], first or second English edition, lacking title-page, foxing and damp-staining, modern wrappers [Adams, American Independence 31f; Ford 288; Sabin 25502], 8vo, [London, John Almon, 1767]

Footnotes

Rare: one of the two English printings by John Almon of Franklin's testimony to the House of Commons in 1766, which helped secure the repeal of the Stamp Act.

Ford hypothesized that the pamphlet was first printed in London by Almon in 1766, without imprint, fifty pages long and with the caption-title as found here, perhaps from fear of being prosecuted for publishing Parliamentary material. But as Adams points out, apart from the title-page, the the text is identical in both printings and it could equally be argued that it was some later copies which were censored by the removal of the title-pages. Either way there do seem to be an unusual number of institutional copies without a title-page. The pamphlet was also re-issued as part of volume 3 of Almon's A Third volume of Interesting Tracts, 1766-1767.
