Footnotes

A SEMINAL WORK ON SOUTH AMERICAN BOTANY. UNRECORDED FIRST ISSUE OF THE SCARCE SECOND EDITION.

The first edition appeared in 1794 in Madrid, with Latin and Spanish text, but only a few copies were distributed before it was impounded. The second edition was published in 1797, in Latin only, and was edited by the botanist Gaspar Xuarez, a native of Tucuman (Argentina) who was residing in Rome, and who added taxonomical and historical notes as well as several corrections. The present issue is dated 1796 and can therefore be considered an unrecorded first issue of the second edition. One other copy with this early dated state of the title-page has sold at auction: Christie's East, New York, 5 June 1997.

Provenance: Collegium Urbanum de Propaganda Fide (Rome), two ownership stamps on title page; Christie's New York, 3 October 2000, lot 17.
