Footnotes

RARE COMPLETE SET OF MARTIUS'S MONUMENTAL BRAZILIAN FLORA, which took some sixty-six years to produce.

In 1817 Carl F.P. von Martius travelled to Brazil with the zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix, as part of the dowry arrangement for Archduchess Leopoldina of Austria's marriage to the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro I. From 1817 to 1821 they explored throughout the country, collecting upwards of 10,000 herbarium specimens.

Martius edited the first volumes, with the project taken forward after his death in 1868 by August Eichler, and then Ignatius Urban.

Provenance: Chicago University, perforated stamp on titles and withdrawal bookplate inside upper covers; Christies, 2 July 1994, lot 286.
