Arranged by John M'Celland, 4 parts bound in 1 vol., 627 lithographed plates (numbered 1-661 with 37bis plates of which 34 noted by Nissen, but without plates 175-242, 65, 395, 511 and 524 as issued), approximately 100 hand-coloured, a scattering of small wormholes to opening and final plates, blank fore-edge of first 20 creased, light toning, early half morocco tooled in gilt on spine, t.e.g., upper joint slightly weakened [Nissen BBI 759; Priztel 3568, parts 1-3 only], folio, Calcutta, Bishop's College Press[-C.A. Serrao-A.B. Coshan], 1847-1854

William Griffith (1810-1845) was a botanist and surgeon who, in the service of the East India Company, undertook extensive travels through India, Myanmar, Bhutan and Afghanistan. After his death John McClelland published his botanical works with the assistance of the Calcutta Journal of Natural History.
