Footnotes

A very rare illustrated ichthyological atlas, with only one copy (volumes 1-7 only, Bonhams, 22 November 2011, lot 491) listed on Rare Book Hub.

The Atlas, considered the most splendid work on fishes of the nineteenth century, was the work of Pieter Bleeker, director of the Rijksmusuem van Natuurlikje Histoire at Leiden, who had begun his study on the fish of the Indo-Pacific Ocean in 1845, and brought over 12,000 samples from the East Indian Archipelago to Holland.
