BURTON (RICHARD)

Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El Medinah and Meccah, 2 vol. bound in 1, second edition, 14 plates (including 2 frontispieces), 4 maps or plans (3 folding), 2 plates trimmed within plate margin, light foxing and age-toning, contemporary blind-stamped mauve cloth with gilt-tooled image of camels and handlers beneath palm trees on upper cover, g.e., rebacked preserving original spine, fading (mostly to spine) [Penzer, pp.50-52], 8vo, Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1857

Footnotes

Provenance: School prize inscription ("Second Conduct Prize") dated 1865 on front free endpaper. Penzer records three variant publisher's binding, but also notes that booksellers purchased unbound copies from the publisher "to be subsequently issued in somewhat elaborate binding. These were sold for school prize books. They occasionally turn up [as with our copy], and their appearance is sometimes difficult to explain".
