MNEMONIC GLOBE

STOKES (WILLIAM) "Stokes' Capital Mnemonical Globe, (Copyright), One Shilling, by Post 14 Stamps, of Mr. William Stokes, Teacher of Memory, Royal Polytechnic Institution, London", 8 hand-coloured engraved card gores, the African and American continents overlaid with the image of a human face, all joined at the equator and forming a globe when folded, laid on linen with brass rings at each gore point (5 missing, 3 tips with small tear), total dimensions 300 x 610mm., Houlston & Sons, [1868]

Footnotes

William Stokes devised this unusual "facial" globe, with the Greenwich meridian running down the length of the nose, in order that a student might more readily recall the location of various countries and capital cities by relating them to facial features - for instance the Cape Verde Islands can be found within the tear duct of the right eye.
