GOLDING (WILLIAM)
Footnotes
Presentation copies of the second and third of Golding's novels, inscribed for John Milne. Milne had been at Oxford with Golding, and later taught alongside him at Bishop Wordsworth, signed up for the Navy at the same time in December 1940, and was godfather to Golding's daughter Judy, who wrote "Their friendship was a constant for nearly forty years" (Judy Golding, The Children of Lovers: A Memoir of William Golding, 2011). She also recalled that in the 1950s the two men often went sailing together with their families, outings referenced in Golding's inscription in Pincher Martin.
Provenance: John Milne, and by descent to the present owner.
