Drawn from the Life by Bernard Blackmantle, 2 vol., FIRST EDITION, 71 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Robert Cruikshank (67), Thomas Rowlandson (2), Brighty (1) and Wageman (1), 75 woodcuts (one full-page), French morocco gilt by A.Taffin (gilt-stamped inside upper covers) with elaborately tooled side panels, and spines in 6 compartments within raised bands, gilt dentelles, t.e.g., the upper joint of each volume very neatly repaired [Abbey Life 325; Tooley 504], 8vo, Sherwood, Gilbert and Piper, 1825-1826

A finely bound first edition of The English Spy, "the liveliest and most authentic of the books of the 1820s depicting the raffish life of English pleasure seekers" (Gordon Ray). Robert Cruikshank provided the majority of the aquatints, with two by Thomas Rowlandson.
