Footnotes

'WASH THE PART AFFECTED WITH STRONG RUM': A COMPREHENSIVE RECEIPT BOOK BELONGING TO CAPTAIN HENRY JERVIS OF CHESWARDINE.

An ownership inscription on the title page and internal evidence indicate that this volume was in the possession of Captain Henry Jervis (b.1774), son of Henry Zachariah Jervis (1739-1821) and Sarah Pigot of Cheswardine, Shropshire. He married Mary Wilcox in 1802, much to the disapproval of his father, who altered his will to prevent him inheriting the estate, which was sold after his father's death. When the militia was disbanded after Waterloo and after a failed attempt at business in Stourbridge, he returned to live at Vicarage House in Cheswardine. His financial difficulties continued, however, and he fled with his family to France in the 1820's to escape his creditors. His son, Henry Zachariah Jervis, a solicitor, regrettably inherited his father's financial acumen. He was declared bankrupt in 1843, and in 1857 was sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of financial fraud, and for claiming to be the son of Admiral Sir John Jervis, to whom he was only very distantly related.

Volume One of the English edition of A Compleat History of Druggs, written by Monsieur Pomet, chief druggist to the French King, includes a materia medica derived from plants, including discussions of cacao, sugar and tobacco, with the second volume discussing materia medica derived from animals, metals and minerals, including information on the bezoar stone.

Provenance: Thought to have been inherited or purchased by Kenneth Doulton (1882-1974), scion of the Doulton family of Doulton & Co. Ltd; thence by descent to the present owner.
