The Life and Death of a Man of Character, 2 vol., FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, [ONE OF 750 COPIES], half-titles, publisher's advertisement at end, some spots or smudges throughout, volume 1 with front free endpaper and title working loose, short tear touching text on pp. 199/200, blank corner of 3 leaves torn where roughly opened (the stub still attached to facing leaf), a few corners turned, publisher's smooth dark blue cloth blocked in black with a floral design, spines lettered in gilt, grey floral endpapers, worn and age soiled, short tears at extremities of spine, remnants of paper shelf label on spines [Purdy, pp.50-54], 8vo, Smith, Elder, & Co., 1886

The Mayor of Casterbridge was published in weekly instalments in the Graphic from 2 January to 15 May 1886, before being published in book form on 10 May 1886 in a print run of 750 copies, only 650 of which were bound, making it very rare in the publisher's cloth.
Provenance: Brandesburton Mutual Improvement Society, blind-stamp on front free endpaper of volume 1, and the half-title of volume 2. The Society was formed in a village in Yorkshire in 1852, and by 1892 had approximately 60 members.
