The present work is a portrait of Christine Lerolle, daughter of Henri Lerolle, a painter, collector, and music lover. Renoir later painted a portrait of Christine with her sister Yvonne titled Yvonne et Christine Lerolle au piano (1897), which is currently in the collection of the Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris.
