Footnotes

Cecily Brown is a painter and printmaker who explores colour and movement, figuration and abstraction, taking inspiration from her contemporaries and the Old Masters.
This work references a 15th century engraving by Martin Schongauer. Brown captures the movement and expressiveness of the engraving, adding vibrant colours in her distinctive energetic brushwork to convey the fervour of the tormentors and the suffering of the saint.
