London, Mayor Gallery, Jessica Dismorr, 1885-1939; Paintings and Drawings, 28 April-15 May 1965, cat.no.23
This portrait, and Lot 38, depict David Gascoyne and A.S.J. Tessimond, two poets from the group that Dismorr drew in 1934. They were drawn either in David Archer's bookshop near Holborn or in the café opposite, and are more probing and characterful than the other portraits in the series. Dismorr knew both men, and responded to the unhappiness in each – Gascoyne a young man of nineteen, Tessimond in his early thirties.
