In 1957 Vanessa Bell paid her last visit to Venice, staying with Duncan Grant at the Pensione Seguso, their usual hotel on the Giudecca. Bell had been amused to find from the visitor's book that her old teacher at the Royal Academy Schools, John Singer Sargent, had stayed in the same hotel many years before.
This view of the Redentore was painted on the quay outside the Hotel which had a small covered area with tables for guests. Bell often painted there. By then in her late seventies she was less inclined to paint elsewhere in Venice.
