A rare English delftware 'Farmyard' plate, circa 1720-30

Probably Bristol, painted almost entirely in manganese with an animal standing by a fence in a landscape, yellow spots on its body and holding something in its mouth, flanked by sponged trees, concentric lines below the rim, 21.5cm diam

Footnotes

The profile of this plate would suggest a Bristol origin. See Samson and Horne's 2007 catalogue for a discussion on the so-called 'Farmyard' series and the differences between London and Bristol examples. The present lot is exceptional in its animal subject, the vast majority of 'Farmyard' type plates depicting birds. It seems likely that it depicts a dog holding a rat in its jaws by a long tail. Alternatively, it might show a deer eating a leaf.
