An English delftware Adam and Eve charger, early 18th century

Painted in blue, green, manganese and yellow with The Temptation, Eve offering Adam forbidden fruit, the devilish serpent coiled in the branches above, sponged foliage and tufted grass filling within the concentric blue and yellow border, below a blue dash rim, 33.8cm diam

Footnotes

The tufted grass on a turquoise ground is depicted on a number of early 18th century chargers attributed to Norfolk House, London. See Michael Archer, Delftware in the Fitzwilliam Museum (2013), A.32-33. A Bristol origin is also possible, as the composition with figures striding towards each other is found on a charger from the Graham Slater Collection, sold by Bonhams on 11 June 2025, 159.
