A fine engraved coaching rummer, circa 1810

Possibly Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the bucket bowl decorated with a mail coach and four horses, the coachman with a whip and the guard with a post horn, the side of the stagecoach inscribed 'No 172/ York/ London/ Edin/ Mail' flanking a coat of arms, the reverse with the initials 'EEW' within a circular sunburst cartouche, on a short plain stem and square 'lemon squeezer' foot, 15.3cm high

The first mail coach between London, York, and Edinburgh was put on the Great North Road in October 1784, taking three days and two nights to complete the journey, and such coaches continued to depart from London until April 1846. A related coaching rummer from the Ian Robertson Collection is discussed by Delomosne and Son, Engraved Glass from North East England (2013), no.12 and another was sold by Bonhams on 1 December 2021, lot 147.
