A Dutch engraved 'kraamvrouw' or accouchement goblet, circa 1760

Perhaps by Jacob Sang, the generous bell bowl engraved with a continuous interior scene variously depicting a mother in an elaborate canopied bed, a lady seated on a chair at the foot of the bed using a cord to rock a baby in a cradle, a skirt on a wicker stand nearby, the reverse with two chairs around a tripod table upon which rests a pair of covered urns and a bowl of sweetmeats, all on a continuous tiled floor, the rim inscribed 'T' WELVAAREN VAN DE KRAAMVROUW EN T' KINDJE' (To the health of mother and child), set on a beaded knop and circular foot, 15.6cm high

Footnotes

A mother and child were blessed with a drink from accouchement glasses such as this, presented towards the end of a mother's confinement. They were probably used to serve kandeel, a traditional and nourishing liquor of warm wine, sugar, egg yokes and spices such as cinnamon. An example with identical engraving attributed to Jacob Sang is in the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. no.
2023.1327a-b), and the quality of the decoration of the present lot suggests that his hand may be responsible. A pair of comparable 'kraamvrouw' goblets signed by Jacob Sang and dated 1762 are in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.C.466-1936).
