A Dutch engraved armorial light baluster 'Council of State' goblet, circa 1750-60

The flared round funnel bowl decorated with the crowned coat of arms of the of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces, the Batavian lion holding a sword and seven arrows, flanked by lion supporters, on a banner inscribed 'CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRES CUNT' (Small Things Flourish by Concord), inscribed 'DE EDELE MOGENDE HEEREN RAADEN VAN STAATE' (The Noble and Mighty Lords of the Council of State) to the rim, on a slender multi-knopped stem with an angular shoulder knop above a beaded inverted baluster and teared plain section terminating in a basal knop, over a conical foot, 19.2cm high

The Dutch Council of State functioned as the executive committee for the Dutch Republic, carrying out executive functions for the Union. It consisted of twelve members appointed by the provinces, together with the Prince of Orange. They formulated the budget, organised and financed the army and navy, and levied taxes throughout the Union.
