The round funnel bowl finely painted in opaque white with three figures wearing pointed hats seated in a boat, probably a coble, two rowing and the other at the stern, flanked by islands of shrubs and trees, on a double-series stem with a pair of opaque white spiral tapes encircled by an eleven-ply spiral band, over a conical foot, 14.1cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Christie's, 23 May 1989, lot 221

Boating scenes on Beilby enamelled glass are exceptionally rare, and the boat is likely a Northumberland or Scottish coble, common on the Tyne and Scottish borders. Only one other example would appear to be recorded, which depicts two figures in a boat towing a tug-net, used for salmon fishing. This is illustrated by L M Bickerton, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), p.333, no.1082 and was sold by Bonhams as part of the Julius and Ann Kaplan Collection on 15 November 2017, lot 24.
