Footnotes

Provenance
With Simon Spero, June 2003

A similar teabowl and saucer in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated by Ayres, Impey and Mallet, Porcelain for Palaces (1990), p.278, no.325. The design is based on Meissen's 'Red Dragon' pattern, and while this is presumed to have been based on an early Japanese kakiemon pattern, it seems more likely that the Japanese copied Meissen, see p.262, no.296. A similar saucer from the Billie Pain Collection was sold by Bonhams on 26 November 2003, lot 25 and a teabowl on 5 December 2007, lot 143.
