Footnotes

Provenance
Anton Gabszewicz Collection

In its formative 'Dry-Edge' period Derby mostly focussed on figural and animal models. The present form competes with contemporary Chelsea vegetal and foliate-moulded forms like acanthus-leaf teawares. Derby's strong modelling means that little detail is lost and the slightly creamy and silky glaze suits the fashion for undecorated porcelain at this time. Another white cabbage tureen is illustrated by Dennis Rice, Derby Porcelain (1983), p.95, fig.38. Two examples with enamelled decoration are recorded. One from the Lady Hilda Charteris Wemyss Collection was sold by Christie's on 15 February 1988, lot 202 and the second from the Estate of Mrs Charles Engelhard was also sold by Christie's on 18 March 2005, lot 144.
