A massive Bohemian engraved 'Four Seasons' beaker, late 17th century

In thick-walled glass and of tapering bucket shape, reserved with four landscape panels framed by borders of circlets, each with a single figure emblematic of one of the Seasons, Spring carrying a bundle of flowers and foliage, Summer with a large sheaf of wheat, Autumn carrying bunces of grapes, and Winter a bundle of faggots, with egg-and-dart style borders to the rim and base, 16.7cm high

Footnotes

Beakers of this large size were perhaps not used for drinking. In Dutch they are often known as Druivenspoelers (grape rinsers), and may have served such a purpose.
