Provenance
Hutton Collection

Oxymel Simplex or simple oxymel was a popular traditional concoction of honey and wine vinegar used as a cough medicine. Syrupus De Althaea or syrup of marshmallows was used to treat bladder and kidney complaints, see lot 102 in this sale for a delftware example for this concoction also from the Hutton Collection. A very similar jar is in the collection of the Royal College of Physicians (inv. no.HO139).
