A pair of London delftware apothecary syrup jars, circa 1730-50

With globular bodies raised on spreading feet, the strap handles with scrolled lower terminals, painted in blue below the flanged spouts with cherub, shell and angel head labels, inscribed 'S:DE:ALTHAEA' and 'S:DE:MECON:' respectively, the tops later covered with paper tied with string, 18.8cm high (2)

Syrupus de Althaea or syrup of marshmallow was chiefly used for diseases of the bladder and kidney stones. Syrupus de Meconium was a syrup of poppy juice which, like other opiates, was used to calm and encourage sleep.
