Footnotes

A Deccani panel formerly in the Benguiat Collection, and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Accession No. 05.25.2), dates to the 16th/ 17th century and has a similar yellow ground, foliate designs and fringe to the present lot. However, the chain stich featured on our panel is indicative of a later date of manufacture, bearing a resemblance to 19th century Gujarati embroidery, as in a textile sample in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Museum No. IM.258-1920).
