Footnotes

The shape of the hilt of the present lot, with its bulbous domed quillons, is of a type dating to the 17th century. For further examples see Robert Hales, Oriental Arms and Armour: A Lifetime's Passion, London, 2013, p. 162, nos. 393 and 394. The sparse decoration with scrolling tendrils also points to an earlier date of production (see ibid, p. 162, no. 397).
