Footnotes

Provenance
Sale; Sotheby's, London, 10 July 2025, lot 118 (part lot), where acquired by the present owner

Please note the present lot is offered together with a letter from the Artist to Frederick Ashton, while he was the resident choreographer of the Vic-Wells Ballet in Brighton.

In 1931, Edward Burra began producing stage and costume designs, championed by his friendships with British dancers and choreographers. The present lot displays a glimpse at the close relationship between the Artist and Frederick Ashton, who later moved from the Vic-Wells in Brighton to become the Director of the Royal Ballet.
