The present lot is thought to be a portrait of René Hague, one of Jones' closest friends. After meeting the artist at Ditchling in 1924, Hague became increasingly involved in Jones' work. He produced the first printed version of In Parenthesis (1937), edited many of Jones' texts, and wrote the influential Commentary on The Anathemata of David Jones (1977).
