Sale; Christie's, London, 28 April 1999, lot 65, where acquired by the previous owner, by whom gifted to the present owner
Private Collection, U.K.
The present lot bears the inscription 'Painted by son Christopher Wood/Clara D. Wood' (on sheet verso). The watercolour was possibly executed on a trip to Karlsbad undertaken by the artist between September and October 1922, as such, it would make the piece an example of one of the artist's earlier works, executed just one year after Wood's attendance at the Académie Julian in Paris. The visit to Karlsbad was part of an extensive tour of Europe and North Africa, undertaken by Wood between 1922 and 1924, with the Chilean diplomat Antonio de Gandarillas. Their travels were described in correspondence between the artist and his mother, summarised in Richard Ingleby's biography of Wood (R. Ingleby, Christopher Wood, An English Painter, Allison and Busby, London, 1995, pp. 66-67). Copies of the letters are held in the Tate Gallery Archives (Reference: TGA 773.1 – 773.10).
