The present lot was painted in August 1925 when Duncan Grant visited Adrian Stephen, the brother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, and his wife Karin at their home in Essex. The watercolour depicts a side view of the King's Head, an ancient inn on the Essex marshes, which later became a private residence where the Stephen family spent many holidays. It and a few other houses occupied the remote Landermere Quay, a few miles south of Thorpe-le-Soken. The building was surrounded by salt marshes and estuaries. In the 1950s the Quay became the centre of production of the firm founded by Eduardo Paolozzi and Nigel Henderson, who married Adrian and Karin Stephen's daughter Judith, known as Hammer Prints.
