Roy is a Baroda based contemporary artist and printmaker. He studied Printmaking (BFA, 1982–1987) at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, and Painting (MFA, 1987–1989) at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. He later completed an MA in Painting (1990–1992) at the Royal College of Art, London. Since 1995, he has taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda, alongside a career that includes solo and group exhibitions across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
During his student years and through the early 1990s, Roy explored space as both a spatial and psychological construct, bringing narrative elements into dialogue with atmospheric masses of colour and texture. Through the opaque light of oils and their ability to defy the flat edge of the canvas, he developed a practice that allowed works to evolve organically.
In the present mixed-media work, the artist reflects on space, using layering and light to create shifting textures and depth to the paper.
