Burman, a painter and lithographer, infuses his work with vibrant colours and explores themes of myth and fantasy. After graduating from the Government College of Art and Craft in Calcutta in 1956, Burman moved to Paris, where he studied at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts and developed his distinctive, symbolic art over the course of more than fifty years.
His creations reflect his experiences as an immigrant, delving into the influence of Indian traditions, religion, and culture on his life in France. By combining elements from Hindu and European folklore with his personal memories, Burman creates a unique narrative. In his art, Burman invites the viewer into a world of vivid imagination. In the present lot, Untitled (Figures), he transports us to a folkloric, fantastical realm, where ethereal, ghost-like figures move with fluid, otherworldly grace.
