CARLO GIULIANO: ENAMEL AND GEM-SET FRINGE NECKLACE, CIRCA 1870

Carlo Giuliano's fringe necklaces in the Egyptian and Indian tastes are highly sought after, particularly when they remain largely intact and bear his signature as seen in this example. Giuliano's beautifully detailed enamel work was unparalleled and he often used combinations of gemstones that were unusual for the time, including cat's eye chrysoberyl, fire opal, lapis lazuli, moonstone, tourmaline, turquoise and zircon. This necklace is also a precursor to the 'Pool of Light' jewels composed entirely of large rock crystal orbs and drops that created an enchanting optical effect and gained in popularity towards the end of the 19th century. For a similar example of Indian inspiration, set with cat's eye chrysoberyl cabochons, see G. Munn, Castellani and Giuliano Revivalist Jewellers of the Nineteenth Century, 1983, ill.p.144.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
