Peacocks were embraced as a favoured motif in the late Victorian era arising from Queen Victoria's appointment as Empress of India in 1876. Peacocks are a common Indian motif, and used to exemplify the Queen's passion for Indian culture. Notable examples of Victorian era use of the peacock are the Peacock Room by James McNeill Whistler and in the Durbar Room at Osborne House, Queen Victoria & Albert's holiday retreat.
