Footnotes

Although little is written about Parisian jeweller Théodule Bourdier (b. 1837), in his monumental treatise, "French Jewellery of the 19th Century", Henri Vever mentions him twice - he was a noted goldsmith, winning at least two gold medals at the Exposition Universelles in Paris, exhibiting alongside established and well-known names such as Boucheron, Mellerio and Fontenay. When the French Crown Jewels were sold in 1885, Bourdier is recorded as being one of the successful buyers. He also appears to have been related to the Cartier family by marriage. In 1872 he married Marie Griffeuille whose sister Alice would, two years later, marry Alfred Cartier, the son of Cartier founder Louis-Francois and father of the three brothers Pierre, Louis and Jacques. In fact, Bourdier's workshop at 18 rue de la Paix was just five doors away from Cartier at number 13. His works exhibit classic designs contemporary to their time and fine craftsmanship throughout.
