Footnotes

Alexandre Marchak (b. 1892) fled Kiev around the time of the 1917 Russian Revolution, settling in Paris. He then established his business at 4 Rue de la Paix in partnership with Robert Linzeler. The firm became distinguished for their refined Art Deco creations which attracted an international clientele and earned further recognition at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs and the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne.

During the 1940s, Marchak's son continued the family tradition, going into partnership with Jacques Verger, the scion of another important jewellery workshop, Verger Frères, founded in 1872 and celebrated for their innovative designs and technical mastery. The present lot bears the Verger Frères maker's mark. Like Marchak, Verger Frères produced work for many of the world's most prestigious heritage jewellers, including Boucheron, Cartier, Chaumet, Hermès, Janesich, Lacloche Frères, Mauboussin, Marcus & Co., Ostertag, Tiffany and Van Cleef & Arpels, amongst many others.
