During the 1960s and 70s, a number of avant garde jewellers prioritised the natural form of a stone over its intrinsic value. This philosophy determined the resulting design of the jewel and no jeweller tested the limits of this approach to greater effect than Andrew Grima. Spearheading the Post-War revival in jewellery design, Grima was not restrained in any way by pre-conceived notions of how jewellery should look. His revolutionary designs marked a complete departure from the established forms previously seen in British jewellery manufacture. A buying trip to Brazil demonstrated his fearless approach to design in both the sheer scale and challenging abstract forms of the extensive variety of raw crystals ("sticks") and polished slices ("stones") he sourced. The resulting Sticks and Stones collection of 1973, exemplifies his artistry as a trailblazing force of Post-War jewellery design.
