With the reunification of Germany the door was open once more to re-establish the A. Lange & Söhne brand worldwide, a challenge readily taken on by Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein. It was on the 24th October 1994, that the newly re-formed A. Lange & Söhne presented to the world four models which were to be the foundation of the company as we now know it. Forming the cornerstones of their collection these four models were the Lange 1, Arkade, Saxonia and Tourbillon Pour le Merite.
Hailing from one of these iconic pillars is the lot we see before us now - the Lange 1 Moon Phase. Introduced in 2016 it features a moon phase combined with day/night indication, a 72 hour power reserve as well as the distinctive double aperture date windows, all housed within a 38.5mm case. The current example is particularly attractive with its black dial in contrast to the crisp 18K white gold case. In what is otherwise a monochromatic piece, the moon phase offers a splash of blue with 383 individual stars adorning the night sky.
As well as being a beautiful component of the watch, this moon phase complication offers an incredibly accurate record of the lunar movements above us. An average lunar month - lasting 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds - is often rounded off to 29.5 days resulting in a small deviation every 2.5 years. A. Lange & Söhne very proudly laud that their moon phase tracks the cycle so accurately that if the watch was to run unhindered it would be 122.6 years before any intervention was required.
