Footnotes

Pietro Bellotti was the brother of painter Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) and the nephew of Antonio Canal, called Canaletto (1697-1768). Bellotti is known to have apprenticed with his brother for a short time, leaving subsequently to Genoa and from there to France, where he seems to have lived in several towns including Nantes and Toulouse in the second half of the eighteenth century.

The most common themes of Bellotti's are views of Rome and Venice, vedute ideate, and interiors. This view of Saint Peter's Square follows the Venetian School style, capturing the grandeur of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's colonnade - the four columns deep structure that stretches out around the basilica's entrance, said to be designed to symbolise the 'maternal arms of Mother Church'.
