The present work shows a panoramic view towards London taken from One Tree Hill in Greenwich Park. To the far left we can see the Royal Observatory, the original Flamsteed House, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke and completed in 1676. At the foot of the hill we can see the Queen's House, the Inigo Jones designed residence for Queen Anne of Denmark. Beyond that is the Royal Hospital, Greenwich, built on the instructions of Queen Mary II whose aim was to provide hospitality for retired sailors from the Royal Navy. The presence of part of the Royal Hospital in the current work suggests that it was most likely painted in the early 18th Century, as it appears to show King William Court. Built to Wren's designs but under the direction of Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh, the Court was built between 1698 and 1712. Thornhill began work on the decorative scheme of the Painted Hall, at the Northern end of King William Court, in 1707. Griffier has most likely altered the perspective of the present view in order to include all of the aforementioned elements. An earlier view by Griffier, of comparable size and taken from almost the same viewpoint, can be seen in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (BHC1817).
